4. Theory – Preparing the Module

Theory – Preparing for the Module

#1 How can we prepare for the module?

  • Read lots and be inspired!
  • This module is different to the other 3 modules and focuses on the composition of a discursive, imaginative, persuasive, and/or reflective piece of writing.
  • The module forms the foundation of the Year 12 ModC Craft of writing module and provides you an opportunity to experiment with writing.
  • You analyse great writing and mimic their writing techniques to improve and expand your own written expression.
    • Thematic concerns
    • How are the characters and setting developed? (Techniques)
    • Writing style
    • How is the text structured?
  • After you compose your own piece, you will write a reflection to reflect on the experience.

#2 How will YK Education help you?

  • In your private lessons, you will learn the theory, analyse your school’s prescribed material with your tutor and receive feedback on your writing and ideas
  • In your workshop lessons, you will experiment with different writing techniques and edit your work based on the feedback you have received.

#3 What’s your responsibility?

  • Be diligent:
    • Complete your homework weekly
    • Edit your work after receiving feedback. Do not simply click ‘accept suggestion’ on GoogleDocs. You may save time in the short term but this does not benefit anyone.
    • Learn the new vocabulary words
    • Memorise literary techniques
  • Think for yourself:
    • We will definitely suggest ideas for your composition but ultimately, you must make the final decisions. In the past, students have ended up with disjointed ideas in one composition because they incorporated ideas from their tutors and teachers without digesting them themselves.
    • If you don’t understand the suggestions or agree, make sure to clarify with your tutor.
  • Understand the assessment requirements:
    • How many words/What is the time limit?
    • Ask your school teacher to check your work
    • Communicate those requirements with your tutor
