Discussion – Setting

Setting, like character, is central to a narrative, adds meaning to a story, and can be extremely  compelling. After all, it isn’t just about place but also time and social/physical environment. Setting gives the reader a context to  frame and understand the characters and narrative.

But more importantly, the way setting and characters interact can be very engaging to the  reader. It is difficult for readers to engage with the character and story if they can’t imagine  where the character is or what they’re experiencing. It’s also confusing if the reader is unsure where the action is taking place.

  1. Why is setting important?
  2. What are the three types of setting that you should consider?
  1. Temporal setting (The era/period in which the story takes place)
  2. Environmental setting (the larger geographical area e.g. country)
  3. Individual setting (specific places within that area)

3. How to develop the setting.

4.How to prepare (Strategies)
