Why write?
Writing is all about creating a three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional page! It’s like painting a picture but with words.
It’s a chance for you to express your thoughts, ideas or even just things you’ve noticed in a fun and personal way! Your story is ultimately an expression of your own imagination- something that is truly original.
But often this process is hard to pursue! Where do you start? How can we do this?
Long Term Improvement
It can be hard thinking of ideas in the first place, so for long term improvement keeping a notebook is really useful! With it you can record ideas/stories you see or hear like:
· Conversations– often people talk about news, problems, interests- all of these things could help inspire a story!
· Other people’s stories– people often have interesting real-life stories you could use as inspiration!
· ‘Light-bulb’ moments– sometimes you just come up with an idea on your own! But be sure to jot it down before you forget.
· Images– Sometimes an image of a scene, setting or character can help you think of the same things in the future for your own stories.
· Watching movies/shows– now these can be a great source of inspiration for ideas BUT you have to really study/notice the characters, plot, setting AND meaning of these shows (not just slack off!)
· Reading books– even better than watching movies is reading books! This is because they do all the same things but ALSO show you how to write well (not just providing ideas)
In general it’s great to just keep a notebook where you can note interesting things you’ve heard, seen or read. They don’t necessarily have to mean anything now but could be useful when you write a story in the future!
