5. Workshop – Individual texts – Research

Before you begin your close study, follow these three steps for each of your texts.

  1. Research and understand the text
  2. Form your opinion
  3. Link to the rubric

Select one text [e.g. Drover’s wife] to complete with your tutor

Complete remaining texts at home or in the workshop

Form your opinion

In your assessments, you are expected to form a strong thesis (your argument) to the unseen question. Many students struggle with forming their argument when they have not engaged with the text in a meaningful way.

  1. Did you like the story? Why/ Why not.
  2. What is the purpose of the text?
  3. What themes emerge from the texts?
  4. How does the context influence the purpose of the text?
  5. What are the perspectives explored and how is it presented?
  6. How is the reader positioned? Is the reader involved or as an outsider who is encouraged to evaluate the characters/situation?
